I remember doing some eddy turns in the rapids below the falls. I think it was the summer after your first year at university. I was trying to brush up for an upcoming workshop or something. The water was low.
Back to the locks. OK, the waters around the locks sound like those of the Death Star's trash compactor. Maybe the copy should have been simply "I felt like I had paddled into the Death Star's trash compactor." (Wow, this is hella nerdy.) The illustration in the story is great. Check it out. It seems to me that "canoeist Luke Skywalker" is flipping Darth Vader the bird.

Matt! I reckon we did have our bikes, sort of balanced on the gunwales. Did we ever shoot the rapids below Hogs Back? the water's usually too low(?)

Dave, I didn't mention how that story made me quite nostalgic: the summer of taking your canoe down Nepean Creek through the culvert going under Highway 16 and then paddling that stretch of the Rideau. Remember the time we portaged around Hogs Back falls late one night? Did we have our bikes too?

"There's something alive in here."

Some of the locks have watery-garbagey wells/catacombs, if not actual garbage chutes with waste disposal bays. Have you ever looked down through a round opening, past the metal bars, and seen the styrofoam bits floating like 20 feet down? not sure i'd want to get my canoe into that..
